About Köneürgench

Köneürgench is a historically significant city located in the northern part of Turkmenistan, in Daşoguz Province, near the border with Uzbekistan. The name Köneürgench means “Old Urgench,” reflecting its status as one of the most important ancient cities of Central Asia.

In medieval times, Köneürgench was a major center of trade, science, and culture along the Silk Road. It served as the capital of the Khwarazmian Empire and was renowned for its scholars, architects, and craftsmen. The city reached its peak between the 11th and 14th centuries before declining due to invasions and changes in river courses.

Today, Köneürgench is best known for its remarkable architectural monuments, including mausoleums, minarets, and ancient ruins. Notable sites such as the Kutlug-Timur Minaret and the mausoleums of Il Arslan and Sultan Tekesh attract historians and tourists from around the world. Because of its outstanding historical value, Köneürgench is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The modern town near the ancient ruins serves as a local administrative and residential center, with an economy based on agriculture, tourism, and small-scale trade. Köneürgench remains a symbol of Turkmenistan’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
